Success and Failure in Software Engineering: A Followup Systematic Literature Review

Success and failure in software engineering are still among the least understood phenomena discipline. In a recent special journal issue on topic, Mäntylä et al. started discussing these topics from different angles; authors focused their contributions offering general overview of both without deeper detail. Recognizing importance impact this article we have executed followup, more in-depth systematic literature review with additional analyses beyond what was previously provided. These new offer: grounded-theory success factors, harvesting over 500+ factors literature; 14 manually validated clusters that provide relevant areas for success- failure-specific measurement risk-analysis; quality model composed unmeasured organizational structure quantities which germane to product, process, community quality. We show deserve further study as well automated tool support, e.g., monitoring tools metrics able track patterns emerging article. This provides managers risks fine-grained analysis parameters can be appraised anticipate risks.
